Amid a federal government shutdown sweeping Washington on Wednesday, the Department of Energy is continuing business as usual — at least for now.

Carl Coe, chief of staff at DOE, told employees in an email titled “Lapse Day 1” that the office will “continue operating for a short time beyond October 1st.”

“Employees and contractors should continue to report to work unless and until otherwise notified,” he said in the email obtained by POLITICO’s E&E News. “A prolonged lapse in appropriations may require subsequent employee and contractor furloughs. We are closely monitoring each office’s prior year balances and funding.”
