Elon Musk is not the head of the Trump administration’s so-called U.S. DOGE Service, according to a court document filed Monday.

Musk isn’t even an employee of the Trump administration’s DOGE office, says the declaration signed by a senior White House official in response to a lawsuit challenging Musk’s authority.

The three-page filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia offers new details about how the White House defines Musk’s role in the Trump administration’s efforts to slash the federal bureaucracy. President Donald Trump announced before he took office that Musk would lead a so-called Department of Government Efficiency, but the White House has not publicly provided details about the DOGE office’s staffing and structure.
