The Department of Transportation announced a sweeping overhaul of its environmental procedures Monday, part of the Trump administration’s drive to restructure how one of the country’s bedrock environmental laws is applied.

The announcement aims to change how the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is applied at DOT and its agencies.

President Donald Trump ordered the changes on his first day in office as part of his “energy dominance” agenda, and the White House Council on Environmental Quality coordinated similar rollbacks at other federal agencies including the departments of Energy and Agriculture.

DOT issued a series of directives, including an order canceling previous NEPA procedures and separately introducing interim final rules intended to guide each of its agencies until they can write permanent regulations.
