Federal agencies throughout the government are facing a Monday deadline to send the White House their expansive plans for layoffs, office moves and cost-cutting.
The Trump administration gave agencies until April 14 to send over their strategies for overhauling their structures to comply with the president’s goals of shrinking government spending and the size of the federal workforce.
Energy and environmental agencies haven’t yet released extensive details about their broad reorganization plans, but the administration has signaled that deep cuts to staffing and major organizational overhauls are likely coming soon. Federal employees reeling from the administration’s early moves to slash agencies say tension is high as staffers brace for more cuts after an early exodus of government workers.
“We are sick of waiting,” said one Interior Department employee who spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared retaliation. “There’s rumors everywhere” about what the next round of reductions will bring, that person said. “Just rip off the Band-Aid and get it over.”
