The Trump administration’s move to revive the reservoir expansion is putting new pressure on Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has otherwise found common ground with some federal water policies.

SACRAMENTO, California — Environmental groups asked Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday to oppose the Trump administration’s renewed efforts to raise the Shasta Dam in Northern California.

What happened: Fifty environmental, fishing and tribal groups, including Friends of the River and the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, sent a letter to Newsom on Thursday urging him to “stand up” to the Trump administration after it carved out $40 million this month as a down payment on a tentative plan to raise the Shasta Dam to send more water to Central Valley farmers.

“We thank you for your past support, and urge you to continue standing firm against this unlawful and destructive proposal and to make clear that California will not acquiesce to federal efforts that undermine our laws, our Tribes, and our rivers,” the environmental groups wrote.

The Newsom administration did not respond by publication time, but spokesperson Tara Gallegos previously told CalMatters, “let’s not get distracted by conceptual projects, years from viability.”
