NEW YORK — Environmental groups and other left-leaning advocates endorsed Democratic Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado’s run for governor, days after Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul approved a controversial gas pipeline backed by President Donald Trump.
Advocacy groups Food & Water Action, Third Act New York and Citizen Action endorsed Delgado’s long-shot Democratic primary bid Monday, with advocates criticizing the Hochul administration’s approval of the Northeast Supply Enhancement project — a gas pipeline that had been rejected by state environmental regulators three times but was revived by Trump.
“The entire Democratic apparatus of New York City political leaders oppose this pipeline,” New York State Director for Food & Water Watch Laura Shindell told reporters, listing off elected leaders from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani opposed to the pipeline. “Hochul broke from her party and approved the permits for Trump’s pipeline.”
More context: Despite Hochul touting her climate bona fides as she prepares to run for another term next year, advocates are increasingly critical of the governor’s record on environmental issues and are seeking to link her with the president’s energy agenda.
