Small refineries that have been waiting on applications to avoid biofuel blending mandates received good news from the Trump administration: EPA will mostly grant the exemptions.
The environmental agency said Friday that most of the petitions — some of which date as far back as 2016 — will be granted in part or in full.
Twenty-eight were rejected, and seven deemed ineligible, EPA said it determined after a lengthy review.
In approving a mix of outcomes, EPA said it’s returning to a policy from the first Trump administration allowing for 50-percent exemptions when refineries can show they suffered a “partial” economic hardship from the renewable fuel standard’s biofuel blending requirements.
