A new EPA rule addresses discharges and pollutants released from nonrecreational large vessels operating in the U.S.

The rule, finalized Tuesday, focuses on pollution that occurs during regular operation of large vessels. The new requirements create management practices and treatment standards for 20 different discharges and their associated pollutants, including from gas turbines and desalination systems.

Fishing vessels are only subject to ballast water provisions.

“Clean water and healthy aquatic ecosystems provide multiple benefits to nearby communities. They support commerce and commercial fishing, they serve as sources of drinking water, and they connect people to nature,” said EPA Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water Bruno Pigott. “EPA’s final rule will help protect our vital waterways while reducing the spread of invasive species, like zebra mussels.”
