The Trump administration has escalated its attack on a sweeping climate grant program, urging EPA’s independent watchdog Monday to evaluate the Biden-era program for “financial mismanagement.”

EPA requested the agency’s Office of Inspector General investigate the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a $27 billion program aimed at boosting financing of clean energy technologies in low-income communities, of which the Trump administration hopes to claw back $20 billion in grants.

Created by the Inflation Reduction Act, the program has been a top target of the Trump administration as it tries to claw back federal funding to address climate change and promote wind and solar energy.

In a letter to EPA’s acting Inspector General Nicole Murley, the agency asked the watchdog to assist with EPA’s ongoing investigation into the program. Sent by W.C. McIntosh, EPA’s acting deputy administrator, the letter included an offer of “additional resources” that the agency could direct toward the investigation if needed.
