“Second, we will significantly increase customs tariffs, in line with what our American and Canadian partners are doing,” said the European Commission’s industry chief.

BRUSSELS — The EU will implement trade measures that reduce quotas for foreign steel “by almost half,” industry chief Stéphane Séjourné told a steel summit in Brussels on Wednesday.

“First, we will reduce foreign steel quotas by almost half,” Séjourné, the European Commission’s executive vice president for industry, told attendees. A representative in the room confirmed the announcements to POLITICO.

The closed-door summit hosted steelmakers and labor unions from across the bloc to exchange views about the ongoing crisis of the European sector. The Commission is due to propose the measures next week.
