Senate Foreign Relations Committee lawmakers will hear this week from President Joe Biden’s top energy diplomat as they discuss energy security in Europe.
The Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation invited Geoffrey Pyatt, who was assistant secretary of State for energy resources from 2022 until 2025, to discuss the topic. Pyatt, a career diplomat, is now senior managing director for energy and critical minerals at McLarty Associates.
The hearing comes at a tumultuous time for U.S. relations with Europe, including on energy, with President Donald Trump’s actions straining trans-Atlantic relationships.
The U.S. increased natural gas exports to Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Trump has sought to increase those shipments. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and others have traveled to Europe to make that happen.
