EPA’s Obama-era general counsel has been named to the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board.
“After decades of public service at the federal level, and other significant roles in the private and non-profit sectors, I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the people and communities of the Commonwealth of Virginia, my home state,” Avi Garbow wrote Wednesday on LinkedIn. Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) announced his appointment to the board, which is charged with writing air pollution regulations.
Garbow worked as EPA’s Senate-confirmed top lawyer from August 2013 until January 2017 under former President Barack Obama after spending almost four years as the agency’s deputy general counsel, according to his LinkedIn profile.
After going back to private practice with the firm of Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher — where current Deputy EPA Administrator David Fotouhi has also worked — Garbow briefly returned to the agency as senior counselor for about six months in 2021 at the start of former President Joe Biden’s administration.
