The Federal Aviation Administration’s effort to move thousands of Washington-area workers into the Transportation Department’s headquarters faces a major complication: not enough room, according to an internal document reviewed by POLITICO.

“Approximately 1,000 personnel cannot be accommodated in DOT east building based on current space planning,” say draft “FAA Consolidation Strategy” notes from a March 12 meeting about the relocation, which was attended by various department officials. The draft notes were distributed to high-ranking leaders at DOT.

A person familiar with the matter, who like others in this story was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue, said: “There has never been enough space.”

What that means for the project, including its timeline, remains unclear.
