Federal health researchers scrutinize offshore wind

The Depatment of Health and Human Services’ probe comes as the Trump administration works to stymie renewable energy projects.

The Department of Health and Human Services has been analyzing potential hazards associated with offshore wind, according to two people familiar with the effort.

HHS leaders directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) this summer to review offshore wind’s potential harm to commercial fishermen, said an HHS employee who requested anonymity because they feared retaliation.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has spoken approvingly of the Trump administration’s scrutiny of offshore wind. NIOSH is an office within HHS’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard confirmed the department’s ongoing examination of offshore wind.
