The Trump administration is throwing its weight behind calls to repower Indian Point.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) visited the nuclear power plant Friday and called for it to be reopened, citing skyrocketing energy costs and grid reliability concerns.

“It was just a foolish political decision blowing with the winds of the day that we’re going to shut down our nuclear power plant,” Wright told reporters. “The only way you can add a new data center or build a Micron semiconductor facility is if you can increase the capacity at peak demand.”

More context: Indian Point is in the process of being decommissioned after former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo negotiated a closure agreement in 2017. Formerly owned by Entergy, the plant was acquired by Holtec in 2021 to take over the decommissioning process.
