The Federal Emergency Management Agency will extend housing aid for those who lost their homes in the Los Angeles wildfires for another year, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday.
Why it matters: Despite a bitterly contentious relationship with President Donald Trump, Newsom and other state leaders like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass lobbied the president to continue providing financial relief to the state.
“Thousands of Los Angeles families are still working to rebuild their homes and their lives, and this extension will help ensure survivors continue receiving the support they need during this critical phase of recovery,” Newsom said in a prepared statement. “We’re grateful FEMA listened to the concerns raised by survivors, local communities, and advocates across California and approved this extension.”
What happened: FEMA authorized the extension of the Individuals and Households Program financial housing assistance period for homeowners through July 2027. Renters received a three month extension through October 2026.
