The House bill received its first committee hearing as the legislative session is nearing its end, while the less restrictive Senate version is headed to that chamber’s floor.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — A state House committee on Tuesday rewrote and advanced a bill regulating new large data centers despite objections from some industry groups.

Details: The House State Affairs Committee advanced a substitute bill that dropped some restrictions but added others that critics said discourage data center development.

The measure would prohibit data centers within five miles of schools or residential property unless unanimously approved by local governments. It would also prohibit local governments from entering non-disclosure agreements with data center developers.

State Rep. Mike Giallombardo (R-Cape Coral) voted against the measure, saying no developer of any large project would begin the site selection process without such a non-disclosure agreement with cities and counties.
