TALLAHASSEE, Florida — A state House panel advanced a bill that would encourage the development of advanced nuclear reactors and direct state regulators to develop rules governing their use.

Details: Bill supporters said the measure is needed to push President Donald Trump’s “energy dominance” agenda. They said the legislation would encourage the development of new, smaller nuclear reactors, including those that could exclusively serve large, off-grid power users, such data centers.

“It’s a national security issue, it’s a safety issue, it’s a quality of life issue,” state Rep. Chip LaMarca, chair of the House Economic Infrastructure Subcommittee, said during the hearing.

“As we start talking about ways to power Florida in the future, I think this is a healthy conversation to have,” LaMarca added.
