The panel’s top Democrat, New York Rep. Gregory Meeks, said the bill would “curtail Russia’s influence in the nuclear energy market.”

The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday advanced a bill meant to increase U.S. collaboration with Europe in nuclear energy development.

The “U.S.-European Nuclear Energy Cooperation Act,” H.R. 2504, passed the committee in a 43-3 vote with bipartisan support on a busy day that saw nearly two dozens pieces of legislation before the panel.

Introduced by Rep. Bill Keating (D-Mass.), ranking member of the Europe Subcommittee, the legislation aims to boost nuclear energy collaboration in Europe to combat Russia’s “malign influence” in the sector, referencing the country’s targeted seizure of nuclear facilities during its ongoing invasion in Ukraine.

“The United States is stronger when we work with our European allies to build capacity, strengthen supply chains, and foster responsible and safe use of nuclear weapons in Europe,” Keating said.
