The Trump administration’s pick to lead the Forest Service won praise from advocates for a more intensive approach to managing national forests.
In selecting former Idaho timber executive Tom Schultz as Forest Service chief to replace Randy Moore, “They could not have picked a better person to lead the agency,” said the Federal Forest Resource Coalition, representing companies that harvest trees on federal lands. Schultz is a former president of the organization.
Moore is set to retire effective Monday.
The praise from timber interests contrasts with skepticism from environmental groups that said Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins had made the cutting of national forests, rather than their protection, the agency’s top mission.
