The former head of the Justice Department’s first-ever environmental justice office has died. She was 58.

Cynthia Ferguson was tapped in 2022 to lead the DOJ office as part of the Biden administration’s pledge to protect low-income and minority communities from unfairly shouldering the burden of air and water contamination and planet-warming emissions.

She died on March 12, according to a funeral home notice.

Ferguson retired from DOJ last year after 25 years of service. She was among a group of DOJ attorneys placed on administrative leave at the start of the second Trump administration after the president and his appointees at the department closed out work on diversity, equity and inclusion.
