Government employees furloughed under the government shutdown are preparing to head back to work Thursday if a funding deal is finalized Wednesday night.
President Donald Trump could sign legislation to fund the government Wednesday evening, putting an end to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Federal workers across the government who were furloughed by the shutdown are expected to head back into their offices Thursday if that happens.
“That is what has happened in the past — if it is signed the night before, no matter how late, you head back to work the next day,” said Nicole Cantello, the head of a union that represents EPA employees in the agency’s Chicago regional office.
“We’ve told all of our members to be ready to go back tomorrow,” Cantello said.
