The Trump administration has sent $77 million in previously frozen funding to the Gateway rail tunnel project, following a federal court directive.
On Monday, President Donald Trump called the $16 billion project between New York and New Jersey “financially catastrophic for the region,” but he did not indicate the administration would stand in the way of releasing additional funds. A judge is set to hear an appeal from the administration early next week.
The Gateway project, which has halted construction since funding dried up Feb. 6, has now received $107 million of the $205 million it is owed by the federal government. A status report is due Tuesday afternoon to Southern District of New York Judge Jeannette Vargas on the progress the administration has made in transferring the funds.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed the additional funds were transferred.
