The Trump administration threatened to defund the project at the start of last year’s government shutdown, and President Donald Trump himself taunted New York Sen. Chuck Schumer.

One of the nation’s largest public works projects urgently needs money, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told President Donald Trump during a rare one-on-one meeting Thursday at the White House.

Money is running low to keep work going on the multibillion-dollar train tunnel between New York and New Jersey, a project known as Gateway that Schumer has worked on for years.

During the meeting, the New York Democrat “emphasized the urgent need to promptly release the already-secured funds for the Gateway Program — the most important infrastructure project in the nation employing thousands of workers and vital to New York and the entire Northeast economy,” according to a readout provided by the senator’s office.

The Trump administration threatened to defund the project at the start of last year’s government shutdown, and Trump himself taunted Schumer by saying the project was “terminated,” but administration officials have been putting out mixed signals, with some insisting it would get its money.
