General Motors will use a joint venture with Hyundai to better compete against Chinese carmakers in Central and South America, GM CEO Mary Barra said Tuesday.
GM announced the partnership with Hyundai in August, saying it planned to start selling the new vehicles in those markets in 2028. Barra identified it as part of GM’s strategy to fend off Chinese competition during an earnings call Tuesday.
Working with Hyundai, based in Korea, will help lower the cost of developing and building new vehicles, she said.
“We’re looking to do that and get those efficiencies to make our vehicles even more competitive,” she said.
