Senate Republicans introduced legislation Wednesday meant to prevent the U.S. from rejoining the Paris climate deal under a future Democratic administration.

The Obama administration did not submit the accord as a treaty, which requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate. The “No Climate Treaties Act” would make sure that doesn’t happen again.

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and 23 GOP colleagues released the bill to coincide with the U.S. formally leaving the international agreement this week.

President Donald Trump began the process of leaving the Paris accord immediately after taking office. Trump took the same move during his first term, but President Joe Biden rejoined the accord.
