The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is standing by its bipartisan bill to reform the Federal Emergency Management Agency — even as President Donald Trump may be poised to adopt contrasting recommendations.
A panel advising Trump was set to release directives on Thursday for overhauling FEMA. But the FEMA Review Council’s meeting was abruptly cancelled after a copy of their recommendations was leaked and reported by CNN.
The review council, which is led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, was reportedly set to recommend slashing FEMA’s workforce in half and changing the agency’s name. It was also going to endorse keeping FEMA under the Department of Homeland Security.
Although the council’s recommendations may now be in flux, the leaked report departed significantly from a bipartisan FEMA reform bill making its way through the House.
