Environmental advocates are lining up behind competing candidates in a Chicago-area congressional primary.
The youth-led Sunrise Movement endorsed Kat Abughazaleh in the primary to replace retiring Rep. Jan Schakowsky in Illinois’ 9th District.
Another Democrat running in that primary, Daniel Biss, picked up endorsements this week from the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund.
The closely watched primary on March 17 will mark one of the first major showdowns in a high-stakes midterm election year as environmentalists, progressives and the Democratic Party attempt to redefine themselves and select a new cast of leaders to battle the Trump administration.
