Environmental advocates celebrated former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a “tireless champion” for the environment after she announced her planned retirement from Congress.
Pelosi said she wouldn’t run for reelection after 40 years representing San Francisco. She served as speaker from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023, shepherding major legislation including the Inflation Reduction Act.
“Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi will go down in history as the greatest speaker of all time. Her tenure has been iconic, legendary, historic and transformational,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).
Jeffries listed the IRA, “which included the largest investment in combating the climate crisis in the history of the world,” as among the bills Pelosi helped pass “through her brilliance, her wisdom and her incredible grasp of how to get things done for the American people.”
