Conservation groups are urging a federal appeals court to block the construction of Venture Global’s massive CP2 liquefied natural gas export facility in Louisiana.

In a new lawsuit filed Thursday, the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, the Sierra Club and the Environmental Integrity Project challenge a pair of construction and operating permits from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) for the Cameron Parish project.

The groups claim the state agency’s approvals violate the Clean Air Act, and that the authorizations put nearby residents at risk from pollutants such as fine particulate matter and ozone. The case is being brought before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The project will worsen air quality in an area where residents are already overburdened with “enormous amounts of air pollution,” David Bookbinder, director of Law and Policy at the Environmental Integrity Project, said in a statement.
