Environmental groups are suing an interstate commission for extending a lifeline to a dock expansion project to support exports of liquefied natural gas out of New Jersey.
Delaware Riverkeeper Network and other challengers said the Delaware River Basin Commission’s decision to grant a second extension for the stalled project — Gibbstown LNG Export Terminal Dock 2 — put local communities at risk.
The project involves dredging in the Delaware River and construction of a deep-water berth for LNG tankers to carry fuel at the Gibbstown Logistics Center. Construction could potentially begin between now and March 15 under federal laws protecting the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, environmental challengers said.
“It is disappointing that we had to file this lawsuit to ensure our River and communities are receiving the protection we are entitled to,” said Maya van Rossum, head of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, in an emailed statement.
