An international nonprofit seeking to expand the use of carbon markets to address climate change published a guide Tuesday to help nations and other groups establish and regulate the markets.

The Carbon Markets Access Toolkit tries to address problems that have caused a huge contraction in the voluntary carbon market since 2023 as research increasingly questioned whether market-funded projects actually address climate change.

The Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative published a 90-page guide aimed at “ensuring integrity” in the market — a quality it calls “essential to unlocking” market potential.
