Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens is making Michigan’s auto industry an early focus in her bid for a Senate seat there. It’s an issue that loomed large in last year’s elections.
Stevens, who had been considering a run for Democratic Sen. Gary Peters’ seat since his January retirement announcement, drew on the pride she feels about the auto sector, its impact on the state and her role as an aide to President Barack Obama’s Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry in 2009.
“Growing up in Michigan meant being surrounded by innovation, ingenuity and pride in hard work. And from our farmers to our nurses to our manufacturers, Michigan has the best workers in the world,” she said in her campaign launch video.
Stevens, a four-term lawmaker who represents the northwest suburbs of Detroit, did not delve into electric vehicles and the Biden administration’s efforts to hasten their adoption.
