A House Science, Space and Technology subcommittee will hear from a panel of energy technology evangelists this week on how the Department of Energy’s advanced research arm is funding up-and-coming projects.

The Subcommittee on Energy — led by Chair Brandon Williams (R-N.Y.) and ranking member Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) — will meet Tuesday for a hearing titled “Bridging the Valley of Death: ARPA-E’s Role in Developing Breakthrough Technologies.”

DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy finances the development of technologies expected to have major impacts on energy production or storage but that are not yet ripe for private-sector investment.

The hearing Tuesday comes as ARPA-E is facing its first budget cut in 10 years. The fiscal 2024 funding package that Congress passed last week allocates $460 million to the DOE office, a $10 million reduction from fiscal 2023.
