The Trump administration spent the past year sending federal workers out of the government in droves.

New data shows how extensively federal agencies — including those with energy and environmental missions — have been depleted. In total, more than 322,000 employees have left the government since President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025, according to the figures released by the Office of Personnel Management.

OPM, which serves as the government’s human resources’ arm, last week announced a new website offering the most comprehensive look yet at how this administration has downsized the federal workforce.

The government has made new hires, too, but overall there were nearly 220,000 fewer federal employees on the job toward the end of 2025 than there were the day Trump took office, according to the administration. That’s due in large part to layoffs and incentives from the administration for workers to resign or retire early. OPM included data through November 2025.
