In 2024, the United States experienced 27 weather and climate disasters that each topped $1 billion in damages.

That’s according to a website maintained by NOAA, which maps the costly disasters including heat waves, wildfires and tropical cyclones. Last year was the fourth-costliest on record for U.S. climate and weather disasters, the agency announced Jan. 10.

That website won’t be updated with this year’s data.

A red banner across the top of the page now states, “In alignment with evolving priorities, statutory mandates, and staffing changes, NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will no longer be updating the Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters product.”
