House Energy and Commerce Democrats appear ready to defend the federal government’s chemicals law during a hearing this week on proposed Republican reforms.

The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on the Environment will meet Thursday to discuss draft legislation to update the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

The proposal, unveiled Thursday, lays out a slew of changes that would accelerate reviews and narrow EPA’s regulatory powers to rein in risky chemicals.

Committee Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) and subcommittee Chair Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) said the changes would “increase accountability, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and safeguard the health and safety of our communities.”
