Five top House Democrats accused Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem of “putting lives at risk” through her plans to shrink the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The Democrats — all ranking members of committees that oversee FEMA — told Noem in a letter Monday that dismantling the disaster agency would “cause imminent danger to Americans.” They also argued that reducing FEMA staff “would decimate the Agency.”
“We urge you to immediately cease all discussions or policy changes that would result or effectuate the elimination or weakening of FEMA,” the Democrats wrote.
The letter is the latest attempt to halt the Trump administration’s plans to overhaul or potentially abolish FEMA, which gives states and individuals tens of billions of dollars a year in aid after large natural disasters. The Democrats also have sought without success to have Noem testify before Congress.
