The House plans to vote on legislation this week that would widen the scope of sanctions on Iranian oil as the U.S.-Israel conflict with the country enters its third week.

The “Enhanced Iran Sanctions Act,” H.R. 1422, aims to expand the scope of entities and individuals under sanction for helping Iran sell oil, liquefied natural gas and related fuel products. The bill, introduced by Rep. Michael Lawler (R-N.Y.), is backed by 295 bipartisan co-sponsors.

“This bill is a direct response to Iran’s exploitation of weak spots in the global sanctions framework and its continued attempts to skirt international efforts to limit its malign influence,” Lawler said in a news release last year.

“Our allies in the Middle East, including Israel, are depending on us to take decisive action to stop Iran from further destabilizing the region and advancing its nuclear ambitions,” he said.
