House Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee will use a legislative hearing this week to spotlight a new slate of bills aimed at scaling back federal appliance and building efficiency standards.

The Energy Subcommittee discussion — to feature a top Department of Energy official — comes as lawmakers in both parties trade blame for rising housing and utility prices. Republicans believe that federal rulemaking has driven up consumer costs and limited choice in the marketplace.

“Throughout this Congress, our Committee has heard testimony from witnesses on how red tape and bureaucratic mandates have led to higher energy costs and fewer options for American families,” full committee Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) and subcommittee Chair Bob Latta (R-Ohio) said in a statement.

They continued, “During this legislative hearing, we will examine several bills that support consumer freedom by undoing harmful regulations, reduce costs for Americans, and help strengthen our electric grid.”
