The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved legislation Wednesday intended to speed construction of gas, coal and nuclear power sources.
The committee voted on 13 bills, most of which dealt with permitting and agency authority over baseload generation. Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) said the measures were necessary to power growing artificial intelligence technologies.
All but one of the bills were sponsored by Republicans, and few received any Democratic votes. Committee ranking member Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) said the bills prioritized fossil fuel interests over clean energy technologies.
Pallone and other committee Democrats also cited the planned rollback of clean energy tax credits in the GOP megabill as reason to oppose the committee Republicans’ plans.
