The House will vote this week on legislation that could provide a deeper look at supply chain vulnerabilities tied to critical minerals, with a focus on the energy sector.
H.R. 3617, the “Securing America’s Critical Minerals Supply Act,” from Rep. John James (R-Mich.), would require the Department of Energy to conduct an ongoing assessment of critical energy needs, supply chains and security.
It would also redefine the term “critical energy resource” to mean any resource that is essential to the energy sector and systems of the United States.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the bill last year 23-21 along party lines. Co-sponsors include Republican Reps. Jay Obernolte of California, Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, Neal Dunn of Florida and Erin Houchin of Indiana.
