House appropriators this week plan to release the second of the two major energy and environment spending bills, signaling how deep they’re willing to cut EPA and the Interior Department.

The House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee will unveil its fiscal 2027 plan Wednesday and discuss it Thursday. It will follow release of the Energy-Water bill last week.

The White House has proposed cutting EPA’s spending by half. Interior would be cut by about 13 percent. And even though Congress has bucked the president on deep reductions, that doesn’t mean agencies will come out unscathed.

“I’m worried about the cuts. I doubt that we’ll get enough to really meet the need, especially with the way they cut the EPA. I think we’ll have some real challenges,” said Maine Rep. Chellie Pingree, top Democrat on the Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee.
