Hurdles await Trump’s plans for a triumphal arch near DC

President Donald Trump’s monumental ambitions near the nation’s capital now include plans for an Arc de Triomphe-style memorial, but if he plays by the current rules the project must still clear some significant hurdles.

Meeting in the White House on Wednesday with private donors to another one of his D.C. building ventures, Trump presented a mock-up of the looming structure he wants erected across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. While technical specifics including size and cost remain unclear, the president made clear he wants a grandiose monument that rivals all others.

“We have versions of it, [different] sizes of it, and it’s going to be really beautiful,” Trump said. “It’s fantastic.”

Trump added that the proposed monument could be built as “small, medium [or] large, whichever one looked good. I happen to think the large one.”
