Inside the operation to sway climate voters for Harris

Even though the vice president has not prioritized environmental issues during the campaign, green groups of all stripes have been mobilizing on her behalf.

As rapper Eminem played on loudspeakers, Vice President Kamala Harris’ climate outreach coordinator Camila Thorndike appeared on a projector screen wearing a Harris-Walz camouflage print cap.

She had a clear message for 32 volunteers gathered last week in the League of Conservation Voters’ Washington conference room and 37 more joining via webcast.

“Nothing is more important than having these conversations with the relative handful of voters who are going to decide this tight race,” Thorndike said. “We are counting the minutes. Every single minute counts.”

The push from green groups comes even as Harris has not made climate and the environment part of her core message to voters. She has also proclaimed her support for hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas and has referenced record drilling during her years as vice president.
