Some Interior Department employees who were put on administrative leave last year at the beginning of the Trump administration have been told to return to work in recent weeks.

Rachel Borra, the lead human resources officer at Interior, last month sent a memorandum to staff members who have been on paid leave, notifying them that they had been reassigned to a reorganized headquarters office.

“This reassignment is a management-directed action and is being taken to promote the efficiency of the service,” Borra wrote in the memorandum dated Feb. 26, which was obtained by POLITICO’s E&E News. “Your reassignment is due to necessary updates to your position and job functions in support of the Department’s priorities.”

The memorandum was first reported by Government Executive, which said the returning employees had worked on issues related to “diversity, equity and inclusion,” or DEI.
