House Speaker Mike Johnson canceled a planned vote on a conservative-backed government funding bill that currently lacks the Republican support needed for passage.

The Louisiana Republican told reporters Wednesday morning that GOP leaders would “continue to work on this,” including possibly over the weekend, to try to shore up enough support to be able to hold a vote next week.

Johnson’s funding stopgap, known as a continuing resolution, would extend government funding for six months beyond the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30 and includes a controversial immigration bill known as the “SAVE Act.”

Democrats have balked at the spending package over the immigration bill and the stopgap’s duration. They want a three-month extension of government funding free of partisan add-ons.
