Johnson signals more aggressive approach to IRA repeal

The House speaker appears to be echoing other top Republicans in calling for even deeper cuts to the landmark climate law.

House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared to open the door to a more aggressive approach to repealing parts of the Democrats’ 2022 climate law Wednesday as Republicans move forward with crafting their party-line reconciliation bill.

The House this week approved a blueprint for the budget reconciliation process that will allow the GOP to approve major energy, immigration and national security spending and cuts along party lines.

The speaker in September told CNBC he supported taking a “scalpel” and not a “sledgehammer” to the law “because there’s a few provisions in there that have helped overall.”

But when asked Wednesday if the scalpel approach was too meager given the huge amount of government savings Republicans have promised as part of the reconciliation process, Johnson appeared to signal — at least metaphorically — that Republicans could be open to more broad cuts.
