Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Tuesday outlined new standards for data center developers and pressed for more aggressive policing of artificial intelligence, taking a tougher stance on tech industry dominance in the economy.

Shapiro, considered a likely Democratic presidential contender in 2028, urged lawmakers in a divided Legislature to ensure multibillion-dollar data centers built for the booming AI industry don’t add to rising household electricity costs.

“Developers must commit to bringing their own power generation or paying entirely for the new generation they’ll need,” Shapiro said during the governor’s State of the State Address in Harrisburg.
