Gov. Kathy Hochul is pressing forward with an effort to change New York’s 2019 climate law, raising concerns about the costs of achieving the goals.

ALBANY, New York — Top staff for Gov. Kathy Hochul met in recent weeks with chairs of key committees to discuss concerns about New York’s 2019 climate law.

The lawmakers — primarily chairs of the environmental and energy committees — received briefings on concerns about the state’s climate law from top executive chamber staff, according to two people familiar with the meetings.

Assemblymember Deborah Glick, chair of the Environmental Conservation Committee, said Hochul’s officials did not advance specific changes to the climate law as part of the briefing.

Glick and other key lawmakers remain unpersuaded by the alarms about the cost of implementation raised by Hochul’s administration about the climate law. The governor is raising concerns about the near-term costs of achieving steep emissions cuts and transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources.
